Token Economy

Welcome to CarpaTIC!

Today in the blog, we are going to talk about "Token Economy". Do you know what is it? Let's see!

A token economy is a reinforcement system in which conditioned reinforcers, called tokens, are given to individuals for desirable behaviors. These tokens can be exchanged later for other items, also called backup reinforcers (Cooper et al., 2007).

Now, we are going to see an example of a situation in which token economy would be really useful for the teacher:

Mrs Kent class is special. It is formed by a group of nine six-year-old students, all foreign with no English language or school experience as they are refugees. She has loads of work to do; she must teach these kids to read and write plus some basic mathematics, but she also has to teach them to work at school. She thinks she needs students to learn first to listen to her (as many times they entertein one to another), stay in a correct position, do their work on their own, bring the materials, ask permission to go to the toilet... before being able to learn academic contents.

Here, we propose an example of what to do following "Token Economy":

What do you think of this method? Is it useful? Let us know!
